Lesson Plan

Midpoint formula

Goals / Objectives

Compute the midpoint of a segment given both endpoints, using M = ((x_1+x_2)/2, (y_1+y_2)/2), including when a coordinate is not an integer

Recognize the midpoint as the point halfway across in x and halfway up in y, and so tell it apart from points produced by subtracting the coordinates or by averaging within one point

Find the missing endpoint when one endpoint and the midpoint are given, by solving two one-variable equations

Use the midpoint to locate the center of a circle from the endpoints of a diameter, and to decide whether a given point bisects a segment

Distinguish a midpoint question from a distance question by whether it asks for the position halfway between two points or for the length between them, and state which operation each requires
