Lesson Plan

Solving linear equations

Goals / Objectives

Solve a linear equation in one variable by applying inverse operations to both sides, taking the shorter route where the equation's structure offers one

Solve a linear equation with the variable appearing on both sides

Solve a linear equation containing parentheses by distributing

Solve a linear equation with fractional coefficients by clearing denominators

Decide whether every term of an equation shares a factor, and divide both sides by it before distributing when it does

Standards

"Solve a linear equation in one variable, making strategic use of algebraic structure." "Fluently solve a linear equation in one variable." "Students will interpret, create, use, represent, and solve problems using linear representations; and make connections between different representations of linear relationships, all from high school algebra courses preparatory for the math aligned with college and career readiness expectations."
