Lesson Plan
Surface area of 3D solids (prisms, cylinders, cones, pyramids, spheres)
Goals / Objectives
Calculate the surface area of a rectangular prism, cylinder, pyramid, cone, or sphere by summing the areas of its faces, selecting the formula that sum gives: SA = 2lw + 2lh + 2wh, SA = 2pir^2 + 2pirh, SA = B + (1/2)Pl, SA = pir^2 + pirl, SA = 4pir^2
Find a slant height from a vertical height with the Pythagorean theorem, and use the slant height in the lateral area of a pyramid or cone
Decide from the wording or the context which surfaces count (total, lateral only, one base), and solve real-world problems on that basis (packaging, painting, material costs)
Standards
"Solve real-world and mathematical problems about the: • surface area or volume of a geometric figure or an object that can be modeled by a geometric figure using given information such as length, area, surface area, or volume." "Demonstrate procedural fluency by selecting the correct: • surface area or volume formula and correctly calculating a specified value."
