Lesson Plan

Pythagorean theorem and common triples

Goals / Objectives

Find a missing side of a right triangle with the Pythagorean theorem (a^2 + b^2 = c^2), identifying the hypotenuse and legs first, in diagrams, on the coordinate grid and in applied contexts

Recognize common Pythagorean triples (3-4-5, 5-12-13, 8-15-17, 7-24-25) and their scalar multiples

Apply the converse of the Pythagorean theorem to determine whether three given side lengths form a right triangle, and classify a triangle that is not right as acute or obtuse

Standards

"Solve problems in a variety of contexts using: • the Pythagorean theorem."
