Where have you seen numbers like this?
Numbers used by ancient Romans over 2,000 years ago!
They use LETTERS instead of digits.
And we still use them today!
These are the building blocks of ALL Roman numerals!
I Value Xylophones Like Cows Do Milk
I = 1 V = 5 X = 10 L = 50 C = 100 D = 500 M = 1,000
Always write in CAPITAL LETTERS
There is NO ZERO in Roman numerals!
When a smaller value comes AFTER a larger value:
Repeat I, X, C, or M up to three times:
When a smaller value comes BEFORE a larger value:
The position of the smaller number changes everything!
Only I, X, and C can be used for subtraction:
VX (use V only, not for subtraction) LC (L cannot be used for subtraction) IIII (use IV for 4) VV (never repeat V, L, or D) XXXX (maximum three X's)
What is the value of each Roman numeral?
Write these in Roman numerals:
Question 1: What is the Roman numeral for 100?
The Roman numeral for 100 is:
(Think: Century = 100 years!)
Question 2: What is the value of LX?
LX = 50 + 10 = 60
(L = 50, X = 10, smaller after larger = ADD)
Question 3: What is the value of XC?
XC = 100 - 10 = 90
(X = 10, C = 100, smaller before larger = SUBTRACT)
Addition: Smaller AFTER larger → ADD Subtraction: Smaller BEFORE larger → SUBTRACT
