Quick Review: Yesterday's Lesson

Converting UGX to Foreign Currency:

Example: 15,000 Shs → ? USD

• Exchange rate: 1 USD = 3,750 Shs
• Operation: DIVIDE
• Calculation: 15,000 ÷ 3,750 = 4 USD

Key Rule from Lesson 2:
UGX → Foreign Currency = DIVIDE

Today's Question: The Reverse Process

What if we start with foreign currency?

Example: Someone comes FROM America with 4 US Dollars.
They need Uganda Shillings to buy things in Uganda.

Question: If they have 4 USD, how many Shs will they get?

Exchange rate: 1 USD = 3,750 Shs

Think: Should we divide or multiply? Why?

The Answer: We MULTIPLY!

Converting Foreign Currency to UGX = MULTIPLY

Example: 4 USD → ? Shs

• Exchange rate: 1 USD = 3,750 Shs
• If 1 USD = 3,750 Shs
• Then 4 USD = 4 × 3,750 = 15,000 Shs

Why multiply?
Because the rate already tells us what 1 unit equals!
For multiple units, we multiply!

Understanding the Two Directions

LESSON 2 (Yesterday) | LESSON 3 (Today)
UGX → Foreign | Foreign → UGX
15,000 Shs → ? USD | 4 USD → ? Shs
15,000 ÷ 3,750 = 4 USD | 4 × 3,750 = 15,000 Shs
DIVIDE | MULTIPLY

Notice: The operations are opposite!
Notice: The numbers are the same, just reversed!

The Key Rule: When to Multiply

Converting Foreign Currency to UGX = MULTIPLY

Formula:
Uganda Shillings = Foreign Currency × Exchange Rate

Why multiply?

• The rate tells us: "1 foreign unit = X Shs"
• If we have MORE than 1 unit, we multiply
• Example: 5 USD means "5 groups of 3,750 Shs"
• 5 × 3,750 = 18,750 Shs

Worked Example 1: USD to UGX

Problem: Convert 6 US Dollars to Uganda Shillings

STEP 1 - UNDERSTAND:

• What do we know? We have 6 USD
• What do we want? Uganda Shillings
• What is the exchange rate? 1 USD = 3,750 Shs

STEP 2 - PLAN:

• We will multiply the US Dollars by the exchange rate
• Calculation: 6 × 3,750

Worked Example 1: USD to UGX (continued)

STEP 3 - WORK:
6 × 3,750 = 22,500

Working:

    3,750
  ×     6
  -------
   22,500

STEP 4 - ANSWER:

• Check: Does this make sense? 6 dollars should give us many shillings ✓
• Answer: 6 US Dollars = 22,500 Uganda Shillings

Worked Example 2: GBP to UGX

Problem: Convert 8 British Pounds to Uganda Shillings

UNDERSTAND:

• Have: 8 GBP
• Want: UGX
• Rate: 1 GBP = 4,850 Shs

PLAN:

• Multiply: 8 × 4,850

WORK:

• 8 × 4,850 = 38,800

ANSWER:

• 8 British Pounds = 38,800 Uganda Shillings

Worked Example 3: KES to UGX

Problem: Convert 150 Kenyan Shillings to Uganda Shillings

UNDERSTAND:

• Have: 150 KES
• Want: UGX
• Rate: 1 KES = 29 Shs

PLAN:

• Multiply: 150 × 29

WORK:

• 150 × 29 = 4,350

ANSWER:

• 150 Kenyan Shillings = 4,350 Uganda Shillings

Comparing the Two Operations Side by Side

Converting TO Foreign (Lesson 2):

• 22,500 Shs → ? USD
• 22,500 ÷ 3,750 = 6 USD
• DIVIDE (finding groups)

Converting TO UGX (Lesson 3):

• 6 USD → ? Shs
• 6 × 3,750 = 22,500 Shs
• MULTIPLY (finding total)

They're inverse operations - they undo each other!

Word Problem 1: Receiving Money from Abroad

Problem:
Peter receives money from his uncle in America. His uncle sends him 12 US Dollars. How many Uganda Shillings will Peter get?
(1 USD = 3,750 Shs)

Let's solve together using the four steps!

Word Problem 1: Solution

UNDERSTAND:

• Peter receives: 12 USD
• He wants to know: How many UGX?
• Exchange rate: 1 USD = 3,750 Shs

PLAN:

• Convert USD to UGX
• Use multiplication: 12 × 3,750

WORK:

• 12 × 3,750 = 45,000

ANSWER:
Peter will get 45,000 Uganda Shillings

Word Problem 2: Pair Work

Problem:
A tourist from Britain exchanges 5 British Pounds at a forex bureau in Kampala. How many Uganda Shillings will she receive?
(1 GBP = 4,850 Shs)

She will receive 24,250 Uganda Shillings

Complete sentence: The tourist will receive 24,250 Uganda Shillings when she exchanges 5 British Pounds.

Problem:
James returns from Kenya with 200 Kenyan Shillings. He wants to convert them to Uganda Shillings. How much will he get?

• James has: 200 KES
• Wants: UGX

Complete sentence: James will receive 5,800 Uganda Shillings when he converts 200 Kenyan Shillings.

When to Multiply vs. When to Divide

MULTIPLY when:

• Converting Foreign → UGX
• Starting with USD, GBP, KES, or TZS
• Want to find total value in shillings
• Example: 5 USD → ? Shs (multiply!)

DIVIDE when:

• Converting UGX → Foreign
• Starting with Uganda Shillings
• Want to find foreign currency amount
• Example: 20,000 Shs → ? USD (divide!)

Comparing Values in Different Currencies

Problem: Which is worth more: 5 USD or 4 GBP?

To compare, convert both to UGX:

5 USD = ?

• 5 × 3,750 = 18,750 Shs

4 GBP = ?

• 4 × 4,850 = 19,400 Shs

Answer: 4 GBP is worth more! (650 Shs more than 5 USD)
