ACT Math

Lesson Plan

Properties of logarithms (product, quotient, power)

Goals / Objectives

Expand a single logarithm of a product, quotient, or power into a sum, difference, or multiple, and condense a sum, difference, or multiple of logarithms into a single logarithm, using the product, quotient, and power properties with a common base

Derive each of the three properties from the corresponding exponent law

Identify expressions where no property applies — in particular $\log(x+y)$ and $(\log x)(\log y)$ — and say why

Standards

F 707. Exhibit knowledge of logarithms AF 703. Analyze and draw conclusions based on properties of algebra and/or functions
