Lesson Plan

Volume of 3D solids (prisms, cylinders, cones, pyramids, spheres)

Goals / Objectives

Find the volume of a rectangular prism, cylinder, cone, pyramid, or sphere by selecting the formula for the solid and calculating the value: V = lwh (V = Bh for any prism), V = pir^2h, V = 1/3pir^2h, V = 1/3Bh, V = 4/3pir^3

Find a missing dimension (a radius or a height) given the volume

Solve real-world volume problems (comparing capacities, filling at a given rate)

Standards

"Solve real-world and mathematical problems about the: • surface area or volume of a geometric figure or an object that can be modeled by a geometric figure using given information such as length, area, surface area, or volume." "Demonstrate procedural fluency by selecting the correct: • surface area or volume formula and correctly calculating a specified value."
