Lesson Plan

Multi-step and successive percentage problems

Goals / Objectives

Solve a problem with more than one percent step by writing each step as a multiplication applied to the quantity that percent refers to

Find the net effect of successive percent changes by multiplying their growth factors

Find an original value from the value after a percent change by dividing by the growth factor

Express a percent of a percent as a percent of the whole

Decide what each of two percents is a percent of, and combine them accordingly: add percents of the same whole, multiply for a successive change or a percent of a percent, and go through the amounts for separate groups

Standards

"Use percentages to solve problems in a variety of contexts: • including, but not limited to, discounts, interest, taxes, and tips. • including those that involve percent increases and decreases for many different quantities." "Understand and use the relationship between percent change and growth factor (5% and 1.05, for example); include percentages greater than or equal to 100%." "In a group, 40% of the items are red. Of all the red items in the group, 30% also have stripes. What percentage of the items in the group are red and have stripes?"
