Look at the stack of unit cubes shown. It has a bottom layer of 4 x 3 = 12 cubes, stacked 2 layers high. How many unit cubes make up the whole stack?

12 -- only the bottom layer is counted, since that is the base area

24 -- the bottom layer (12 cubes) is repeated for both layers

9 -- add the length, width, and number of layers together
