Lesson Plan

Effects of outliers on center and spread

Goals / Objectives

Describe the effect of an outlier on the mean and the median of a data set: which way each moves and which moves more (the mean is pulled toward the outlier; the median moves little or not at all)

Calculate the mean and the median after one value is added, removed or changed, using the total for the mean and the position in the ordered data for the median

Describe the effect of an outlier on the range, the standard deviation and the interquartile range, without calculating a standard deviation

Decide whether the mean or the median answers a question about a data set that has an outlier (the median for a typical value, the mean for a total), and justify the choice

Standards

"Understand and describe the effect of outliers on mean and median." "For quantitative variables, calculate, compare, and interpret mean, median, and range." "Compare distributions using measures of center and spread, including: • distributions with different means and the same standard deviations. • distributions with different standard deviations."
