Lesson Plan

Range, IQR, and standard deviation (conceptual)

Goals / Objectives

Compare two distributions with one statement about center and one about spread (the range, the interquartile range or the standard deviation), and interpret each in context

Calculate the range of a data set from a list, frequency table, dot plot or box plot, bound it from a histogram, and calculate the interquartile range from a box plot

Describe standard deviation as the typical distance of the values from the mean, and decide from lists or displays which of two standard deviations is larger without calculating either

State how adding the same number to every value changes the mean, median, range, interquartile range and standard deviation

Standards

"For quantitative variables, calculate, compare, and interpret mean, median, and range." "Compare distributions using measures of center and spread, including: • distributions with different means and the same standard deviations. • distributions with different standard deviations."
