Lesson Plan
Distribution shape (symmetric, skewed)
Goals / Objectives
Describe the shape of a distribution as symmetric, skewed right or skewed left from a histogram, dot plot or box plot
Determine from the shape of a distribution, without calculating, whether its mean is greater than, less than or about equal to its median
Compare two distributions in context with statements about center, spread and shape, using the median as the center of a skewed distribution
Standards
"Analyze and interpret numerical data distributions represented with frequency tables, histograms, dot plots, and box plots." "Compare distributions using measures of center and spread, including: • distributions with different means and the same standard deviations. • distributions with different standard deviations." "Understand and describe the effect of outliers on mean and median."
